Arianna Barley is a mixed-media painter and textile artist from Huntsville, Alabama. She received her BA in Painting with a minor in Political Science from The University of Alabama in 2018, and has been working as an art educator in schools in her community since. She will be pursuing her MFA at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts starting in Fall 2022, with a Graduate Enrichment Fellowship.

Drawing from both personal and distant histories, racial politics, and social structures, she personifies the land as an observer of history and human interaction. “Textiles are important to me in these explorations, as they are a surface almost inseparable from humanity. They brush up against our bodies all day, and engulf us at the end of the day when we shut our eyes to rest. They occupy a space in aesthetics and fashion, but also comfort and utility.” Through the utilization of textiles paired with painting and collage techniques, her art functions as an exploration of the relationship between humanity, land, and history.
